RBC has a colourless spongy body, also called stroma. Stroma contains haemoglobin (Hb), a respiratory pigment. Hb consists of an iron rich haem group and protein part called globin. It can combine easily with oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin, which is an unstable compound. It reacts with carbon dioxide to form carbaminohaemoglobin.
