Diffusion can occur in all states of matter solids, liquids and gases. It is more obvious in liquids and gases but hardly in solids. Some examples are placing food colouring in a liquid will diffuse the colour. And this process does not involve the movement of the molecules across a membrane. Osmosis is a phenomenon where water flows from a dilute solution through a semi-permeable membrane to a higher concentrated solution.
