The village Panchayats or Gram Panchayats are the basic units of the Panchayat Raj. The leader of a village Panchayat, who is known as Sarpanch, is a member of the village. The Sarpanch, along with other members, is elected directly by the villagers. Such elections are held every five years. It is also mandatory to conduct fresh elections within six months of dissolution of the Gram Panchayat. Seats are reserved for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and other backward classes in Panchayats in proportion to their population. Additionally, one-third of the total seats are reserved for women.
