NITI Aayog has initiated the process to develop identified islands for maritime trade, shipping, fisheries, eco- tourism, under-sea mining, oil and gas and other socio-economic activities. It also aims to replace the use of diesel by promoting non-conventional energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy, tidal energy, ocean thermal energy etc., in the islands.
NITI Aayog, in consultation with concerned central ministries/departments, UT administrations and other stakeholders, has short-listed 10 islands for holistic development in the first phase viz., Smith, Ross, Long, Avis, and Little Andaman in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Minicoy, Bangaram, Tinnakara, Cheriyam and Suheli in Lakshadweep.
नीति आयोग ने समुद्री व्यापार, शिपिंग, मत्स्य पालन, इको-टूरिज्म, समुद्र के भीतर खनन, तेल और गैस और अन्य सामाजिक-आर्थिक गतिविधियों के लिए पहचान किए गए द्वीपों को विकसित करने की प्रक्रिया शुरू की है। इसका उद्देश्य द्वीपों में गैर-पारंपरिक ऊर्जा स्रोतों जैसे सौर ऊर्जा पवन ऊर्जा, ज्वारीय ऊर्जा, महासागर थर्मल ऊर्जा आदि को बढ़ावा देकर डीजल के उपयोग को प्रतिस्थापित करना है।
नीति आयोग संबंधित केंद्रीय मंत्रालयों / विभागों, संघ शासित प्रदेशों के प्रशासन और अन्य हितधारकों के साथ परामर्श करके, पहले चरण अर्थात, स्मिथ, रॉस, लांग,लिटिल अंडमान और एविस अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीपसमूह में और लक्षद्वीप में मिनिकॉय, बांगरम, तिन्नकारा, चेरियम और सुहेली के समग्र विकास के लिए 10 द्वीपों को सूचीबद्ध करता है।
