Solution

Millikan oil- drop experiment is used for the determination of the charge.

  • Millikan oil- drop experiment was the first direct experiment to determine the electric charge of a single electron.
  • The apparatus included two metal plates that were placed at a distance with the help of an insulated rod.
  • There were four holes in the plate, and from three, the light was allowed to pass through them.
  • The left hole was used to view the experiment from the microscope.
  • Ordinary oil was not used for this experiment as it would evaporate by the light heat, which may cause an error in the experiment.
  • So, for this vacuumed apparatus, oil of low vapor pressure was used.
  • The scientist concluded that the charge on any particle would always be an integral multiple of e (1.6×10-19)

Hence, the answer is Millikan oil-drop experiment.
