In 1980, some of the people in Punjab started demanding an independent nation named ‘Khalistan’. The Khalistan Movement was a Sikh seperatist movement demanding a separate Sikh state. The territorial definition of this new state consists of Punjab in both India and Pakistan and also parts of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan. The situation in Punjab got so bad that the President's rule was imposed in Punjab in 1983.
