During the extraction of copper from cuprous oxide $(c o p p e r [I] o x i d e)$ the ore is heated in a reverberatory furnace after mixing with silica. In the furnace, iron oxide, slag of iron silicate and copper is produced in the form of copper matte. This contains $C u_{2} S$ and $F e S$ .

Copper matte is then charged into silica lined converter. Some silica is also added and hot air blast is blown to convert the remaining $F e S_{2}, F e O$ and $C u_{2} S / C u_{2} O$ to metallic copper.
