Micellar models of plasma membrane explain corpuscular nature of membrane structure and present repeating unit concept. Fernandez Moran (1962) and Sjostrand (1963) considered the membrane to consist of globular units or elementary particles. The globules, 40 to 70 ˚A in diameter forms repeating units which are closely packed together. All membranes, however, do not have this structure. It is possible that both the unit membrane and globular form of the plasma membrane are present in the cell. Under certain conditions, one form may give rise to another.
