Those species which have the central atom with less than eight electrons in the outermost shell or valence shell are considered as hypovalent species.


Electronic configuration of :

Al - 2,8,3

We can see in the figure,

In AlF3, central element (Al) is in Al(+3) state. So its configuration is

Al(+3) - 2,8

Since there are 8 electrons remaining in the valence shell of the central atom in AlF3. So, AlF3 is not “Hypervalent”.
