During normal inspiration, diaphragm contracts, thus increasing the volume of the thoracic cavity in the longitudinal direction. The external intercostal muscles contract, thus increasing the volume of thoracic cavity in the dorsoventral direction.
During normal expiration, the external intercostal muscles and diaphragm relax. There is no such contraction of any muscle.
During emergency situations or vigorous exercise, the internal intercostal muscles and abdominal muscles contract.
