Solution

The correct option is D Iodine deficiency - Scurvy
A diet that provides all the nutrients in the appropriate quantities is known as a balanced diet. Often people fail to consume a balanced diet due to financial constraints, bad eating habits, lack of awareness, etc. This can lead to deficiency of specific nutrients in the body which are manifested in the form of certain disorders or diseases in the body.

Deficiency of iodine in the body causes a disease known as goiter. It is exhibited as a swelling in the throat which is due to the enlargement of the thyroid gland. Iodine is needed by the thyroid gland to produce the thyroxine hormone.

Scurvy is characterised by skin rashes, bleeding gums, fatigue, etc., and is caused due to the deficiency of vitamin C. Hence option d is incorrect.

Iron is needed for haemoglobin production in the body and its deficiency causes low levels of healthy circulating red blood cells in the body. This disease is known as anemia. So option a is correct.

Zinc is needed for the proper functioning of the oil glands surrounding the hair follicles. Zinc deficiency in the body leads to alopecia (thinning of hair and hair loss resulting in baldness). So option b is correct.

Vitamin A is essential for the synthesis of rhodopsin pigment in the retina that helps in dim light vision. Deficiency of vitamin A reduces rhodopsin synthesis which leads to night blindness (inability to see properly in night or in poor light conditions).
