CH3COCH3 does not have any oxidisable hydrogen atom as in case of aldehydes or alcohols.
So, it undergoes oxidative cleavage under vigorous conditions to give acetic acid and formic acid (after cleavage of C-C bond).
The oxidation reaction is given below:
CH3COCH3[O]CH3COOH+HCOOH
In case of alcohols, oxidation leads to the formation of aldehydes, ketones or acids with same number of carbon atoms.
Similarly, in case of aldehydes, oxidation leads to the formation of acids with the same number of carbon atoms.
Hence, acetone on oxidation will not give carboxylic acid with same number of carbon atoms.
