The general formula for carbohydrates is CnH2nOnIf n=3 (trioses), the formula becomes
C3H6O3.
If n=4 (tetroses), the formula becomes C4H8O4.

But rhamnose has a formula of C5H10O4.
If n=6 (hexoses), the formula becomes C6H12O6. But deoxyribose has a formula of C6H12O5.
