Question

Which of the following pairs will have higher conductance and why?
(a) Copper wire and acetic acid solution at 250C
(b) Copper wire at 250C and copper wire at 500C
(c) 0.1M acetic acid solution or 1M acetic acid solution

Solution

Dear Student,

(a) Copper wire and acetic acid solution at 250 oC. [This is because the conductance of a metal decreases with increase in temperature whereas for electrolyte like acetic acid it increases with increase in temperature.]

(b) Copper wire at 250 oC and copper wire at 500 oC. [The reason is stated above]

(b) 0.1 M acetic acid solution or 1M acetic acid solution. [The conductance increases with increase in concentration of the solution, as more number of ions will participate in the conduction process.]

Best Wishes !
