Filiform papillae are the smallest and are present in large numbers.These papillae contain touch receptors but not taste buds.
Fungiform papillae are much less in number as compared to the filiform ones. They are round and are smaller than circumvallate but larger than filiform. They are mostly found near the tip of the tongue. Each fungiform papilla contains about 5 taste buds.
Circumvallate papillae are usually about 8-10 in number, each containing about 100 taste buds.
