January 1921, saw the campaign for the Non-Cooperation Movement begin with great enthusiasm. In towns, villages, forests, and in plantations, the call for non-cooperation was heard. People interpreted and acted upon the call to “non-cooperate” with the colonial rule in ways that best suited their interests. In different cities, all over India, thousands of students left government-controlled schools and colleges. Even headmasters and teachers resigned. Many prominent lawyers such as Motilal Nehru, C.R. Das, C. Rajagopalachari, and Asaf Ali also gave up their legal practices.
