Huygens believed that light waves differ from water waves in one respect; water waves are transverse, the waves move up and down like a sine wave, while the water moves forwards. Light waves, on the other hand, were thought to be longitudinal, travelling forwards in the direction of the beam. But Huygens' wave theory could not explain formation of spectrum.
