In 1948, the princely states of Punjab which included Patiala, Nabha, Malerkotla, Jind, Kapurthala, Faridkot, Nalagarh and Kalsia were combined to form a new state. This was known as PEPSU i.e Patiala and East Punjab States Union. As a recomendation from Shah commission in 1956, it was merged to form United Punjab.
