In the nitrogen cycle, bacteria present in the soil and roots of legumes converts atmospheric nitrogen to ammonium by ammonification. This ammonium is converted into nitrite and then into nitrates by nitrifying bacterias and this process is called nitrification. There are certain bacterias which convert nitrates back into the atmospheric nitrogen and this process is called denitrification.
