Solution

The correct option is A I2(Na)>I2(Mg)
The correct relation is I2(Na)>I2(Mg)
The electronic configurations of neutral atoms are given below.
Na:[Ne]3s1
Mg:[N3]3s2
Na loses an electron to form Na+:[Ne]3s0 with stable electronic configuration of Noble gas with completed octet.
The removal of second electron will break the octet and will require higher energy. On the other hand, when Mg loses two electrons, it forms Mg2+:[Ne]3s0 with stable electronic configuration of Noble gas with completed octet. This requires less amount of energy.
