The Wildlife protection Act, 1972 provides for the protection of wild animals, birds and plants;
Schedule I and part II of Schedule II provide absolute protection - offences under these are prescribed the highest penalties. Species listed in Schedule III and Schedule IV are also protected, but the penalties are much lower. Schedule V includes the animals which may be hunted. The plants in Schedule VI are prohibited from cultivation and planting.
Vermin are pests or nuisance animals, especially those that threaten human society by spreading diseases or destroying crops and livestock.
Recently, Nilgai which was under Schedule III of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, have been brought under Schedule V for a year by Environment Ministry to enable the cull on the account of the damage they inflict on "life and property". Other species under Schedule V are common crow, rodents, fruit bat.
Pitcher plant falls under schedule VI.
