In nuclear fission, energy is released by fragmentation of a very heavy nucleus. Nuclear fission is an example of a chain reaction. Each one of the three neutrons produced in the first fission event go on to collide with other U- 235 nuclei. This new collision event will, in turn, produce three additional neutrons; so after two collisions, a total of nine neutrons will be obtained. This increase in neutron inventory (3-9-27-81-243-729-etc.) is similar to the population rise and is yet another example of exponential growth.
