The correct option is
B These are localized at a particular location in the body
Cancer is a disease in which the affected body cells grow uncontrollably and destroy the surrounding tissues. In healthy organisms, cell growth gets arrested naturally, when two or more cells come in contact with each other. This is a property of normal cells called contact inhibition.
Contact inhibition becomes a powerful anti-cancer mechanism keeping a check on uncontrolled growth of cells. Cancer cells divide in an uncontrolled manner and as a result contact inhibition fails. So option a is incorrect as cancer cells lack anti-cancer mechanisms like contact inhibition.
Figure : Contact inhibition
When cells start dividing in an uncontrolled manner due to mutation (change in DNA sequence), oncogene activation (activation of proto oncogene) or encountering a mutagen (a chemical or physical agent that has the ability to change genetic code in a harmful way like radiations) they form a mass of cells called tumors.
Tumor is classified into the following types :
- Benign Tumor - These tumors are localized at a particular location in the body and do not spread to the other parts of the body that means they are not showing metastasis. Such tumors are generally harmless. Hence option c and d are incorrect and option b is correct.
- Malignant Tumor - These tumors are cancerous meaning that it will grow quickly and spread to other normal tissues of the body. This ability to spread is called metastasis. Usually, cancer cells metastasize when they get into the bloodstream or the lymph nodes and form secondary tumors across various sites in the body.
The metastatic cells grow rapidly and damage the normal tissues surrounding the cancerous cells.
