Question

Which of the following statement is true regarding adsorption in solution phase?

Open in App
Solution

Adsorption in solution phase:
Solids can also adsorb solutes from solution.
For example,
when the solution of acetic acid is shaken with charcoal in it, a part of acetic acid is adsorbed on the charcoal and leads to the decrease in concentration of acetic acid in the solution.

Characteristics of Adsorption in Solution Phase:
1. The extent of adsorption increases with increase in the surface area of adsorbent since more area is available for adsorption.
2. The extent of adsorption decreases with increase in temperature.
3. The extent of adsorption depends on the concentration of the solute in solution. More the concentration of solute, more will be the extent of adsorption.
4. The extent of adsorption depends on the nature of the adsorbent and the adsorbate.
