Orographic rainfall happens in tall mountains as the mountains act as a barrier for the clouds to travel from one place to other. Masses of moist air rise along on one side of the mountain, get cooled down due to condensation and form clouds. As clouds become heavy, precipitation occurs on that side of the mountain. This side is called the windward side, whereas the side that lies opposite to the windward side is the leeward side.
