Most liquids that conduct electricity are solutions of acids, bases, and salts. When acids, bases, and salts are mixed with water, they dissociate into their constituent ions. Ions are charged particles (molecules). Due to the presence of these free ions the solutions conduct electricity.
Chemical effects of electric current may be defined as the chemical changes produced by the electric current when it is passed through an electrolyte. When an electrolyte such as copper sulphate is dissolved in water, it dissociates into positively and negatively charged ions called cation and anion. When electric current is passed through the solution, these ions start moving towards oppositely charged electrodes. This results in a chemical change in the solution.
