The Rowlatt Act was passed in the year 1919. According to this act, any suspicious person could be arrested and jailed without trial. Gandhiji called it a ‘Black Act’. Motilal Nehru considered it as ‘snatching away of argument, appeal and advocacy’. Gandhi called for a nationwide hartal on 6 April 1919 called the ‘Rowlatt Satyagraha’.
