The Government of Maharashtra has started residential high schools known as 'Vidya Niketan' in Satara, Aurangabad, Nashik and Chikhaldara.
The main objective behind this move was to provide quality education to meritorious students residing in unfavourable rural areas.

Based on recommendations of Kothari Commission, the State Government of Maharashtra set up agricultural universities at Rahuri, Akola, Parbhani and Dapoli in Maharashtra.
UNESCO awarded the international prize for spread of literacy to Maharashtra in 1972.
