Mizo National Front was formed in 1961. The main demand of this organisation was a ‘Greater Mizoram’ which comprised Tripura, Manipur and Mizo majority areas from Lushai hills. Laldenga wanted Greater Mizoram to be an independent nation. In 1966, Mizo National Front announced an ‘Independent Mizoram’. The central government dealt firmly with this rebellion. When the situation calmed down in 1972, the Mizo majority area was given the status of a Union Territory.
