Consider the given data set points 3,5,7,9,11, and 13. The mean of these data points is calculated as,

Mean=Sum of all data pointsTotal number of data points=3+5+7+9+11+136=486=8

It can be observed that the mean of the given data set points lies between the smallest and largest values, i.e., 3813 and it need not to be one of the given values.

Furthermore, mean of given data points is also known as the average of the given data points.

For categorical data, look at the following example where it is required to find the mean of different colour of shirts.
