Question

Which of the following statements are correct?
Statement 1: Aniline undergoes Friedel-Crafts reaction.
Statement 2: Aniline forms a salt with aluminum chloride (a Lewis acid) which is used as a catalyst.

Solution

Aniline is basic due to the lone pair of ee− on the NN atom. Whereas AlCl3 is a Lewis acid as Al has an empty orbital and Cl is electron withdrawing group.
So an acid-base reaction occurs and we get a salt.
Both the statements are correct.
