Which of the following statements are true about Red tide – a term used to describe Harmful Algal Blooming (HABs) in marine coastal areas?
Code:
1, 2 & 3
Red tide is a phenomenon caused by algal blooms during which algae become so numerous that they discolor coastal waters (hence the name "red tide"). The algal bloom may also deplete oxygen (Eutrophication) in the waters and/or release toxins that may cause illness in humans and other animals.
Less than one percent of algal blooms actually produce toxins. Phytoplankton are found at the base of the marine food chain therefore all other life in the ocean relies on phytoplankton. Blooms can also be a good indicator of environmental change not only in the water, but also on land.
