It was created by the UN General Assembly during its first session, to help children and their mothers in post-war Europe and China. China played a very important role as an ally of the Allied Powers. It sided with Britain, France, USSR, and the USA during the Second World War. Even before 1939, it had a war ongoing with Japan. After World World II began, China sided with Britain and Japan sided with Germany. Hence, China had been a battleground, just as Europe was. However, in the year 1950, it extended its reach towards other countries- especially the developing countries of Asia, Africa, and South America.
