The Golden Quadrilateral Highways Project was launched in the year 2000. Its aim was to construct a six lane superhighway between India’s four large metropolises: New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. NH 4 connects Mumbai and Chennai. NH 8 connects Mumbai and Delhi. Both these highways are a part of the Golden Quadrilateral Project. National Highways are maintained by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).
