Iron factories in Jamshedpur and cotton mills at Bombay and Madras were on strike. One lakh mill workers of 75 cotton mill industries of Ahmedabad went on peaceful strike for 105 days. Markets of Ahmedabad remained shut for almost three and a half months. The government arrested Gandhi, Nehru, and Vallabhbhai Patel, thinking that by removing the leaders, they could control the people. The arrests, however, provoked the people to protest and rebel.
