Sir Sayyid Ahmed emphasised to accept modern education if the community was to go on the path of progress.

His thoughts were that lack of education, especially modern education, had kept the Muslims backward. He promoted western science among Muslims. He founded a scientific society and translated science books into Urdu. He further believed that the Muslim community would be best served if they got along with the British government, rather than going along with the nationalist movement.

He established the Aligarh Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875 whose main objective was to promote education in the community.
