In the course of plant evolution from algae to bryophytes and finally to angiosperms the gametophyte phase drastically reduces in size. In bryophytes (Image 1), the independent gametophyte houses the oogonia which is the female reproductive structure and the male reproductive structure called the antheridium. The gametophytic generation is gradually reduced into miniscule parts within the androecium and gynoecium housed by angiosperms (Image 2).
