Alveoli are hollow air sacs surrounded by capillaries. During inhalation, the air in alveoli has a higher concentration of oxygen and hence oxygen passes through the wall of alveolus and then through the capillary wall into the blood. At the same time, blood present in blood capillaries is carrying a higher concentration of carbon dioxide that diffuses from blood into the alveoli. The carbon dioxide in alveoli is carried out during exhalation.
