Which of the following statements is/are correct for hydrophily?
(i) Pollination by water is rare in flowering plants and is limited mostly to monocotyledons.
(ii) In majority of aquatic plants such as water hyacinth and water lily pollination takes place by insects and wind
(iii) In most of the water pollinated species pollen grains are protected from wetting by a mucilaginous covering.
(iv) In Vallisneria, female flowers reach the surface of water and receive the pollen grains, whereas in Zostera, female flowers remain submerged and receive pollen grains under water.
(i), (ii), (iii) & (iv)
Water pollination is seen in a limited number of flowering flowers and limited mostly to monocotyledons which can easily adapt to water medium than higher evolved dicots. Most of the plants, for example, water lily and water hyacinth, where there flowers emerge above the level of water, are pollinated by insects or wind similar to land plants. Hydrophilous pollen grains are covered with a mucilaginous layer which protects them from getting wet. Vallisneria exhibits epihydrophily (pollination at the surface of water) whereas in Zostera hypohydrophily (pollination below water surface) occurs.
