Glycolysis is a pathway in which the breakdown of glucose to pyruvic acid occurs. It results in partial oxidation of glucose. It occurs in both aerobic and anaerobic organisms. In plants, the glucose is obtained from either sucrose or from storage polysaccharides such as starch. The sucrose is converted to fructose and glucose by an enzyme called invertase. After which these molecules enter glycolysis for further breakdown.
