The Rough ER has a rough surface due to the presence of ribosomes attached to its surface, while Smooth ER has a smooth surface due to the absence of ribosomes. The RER is involved in the process of protein synthesis. The SER helps in the manufacture of fat molecules, or lipids, important for cell function.
