Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain was born in 1880 in the village of Pairabondh in present-day Bangladesh. While growing up she learned how to read and write in Urdu. She didn’t know how to read and write in Bangla and English. In those days, women were not encouraged to learn English as it would expose them to the outer world and western culture. However, she learnt Bangla and English from her father and siblings.
