In the process of electroplating, the deposition of layers of one metal takes place on the other material.
In this process, the material on which the coating is to be done is connected as an electrode to the negative terminal, and the metal that is used for the deposition is connected to the positive terminal. Therefore, the silver spoon needs to be connected to the negative terminal.
Also, the item to be coated (Gold) is placed into a container containing a solution of a salt of the same material (Gold). Here, that solution containing the salt of Gold can be Gold Chloride solution but not Copper Sulphate.
As the Gold gets coated on to the silver spoon, its thickness increases due to the extra addition.
