A gonad or sex organ or reproductive organ is an organ that produces the gametes (sex cells) of an organism. In the female of the species, the reproductive cells are the egg cells and in the male, the reproductive cells are the sperm. The male gonads are the testes and the female gonads are the ovaries. These reproductive system organs are necessary for sexual reproduction as they are responsible for the production of male and female gametes. Gonads also produce sex hormones needed for the growth and development of primary and secondary reproductive organs and structures. Hence they act as endocrine glands too.
