Solution

The correct option is B The electron affinity of fluorine is greater than that of chlorine

Statement A
Due to half filled configuration of nitrogen, it has greater ionization energy than that of oxygen. Hence, the statement is correct.

Statment B
The incoming electron is going to be closer to the nucleus in fluorine than in any other elements, so you would expect a high value of electron affinity. However, because fluorine is such a small atom, you are putting the new electron into a region of space already crowded with electrons and there is a significant amount of repulsion. This repulsion decrease the attraction to the incoming electron and so decrease the electron affinity. Hence, the electron affinity of fluorine is less than that of chlorine. Therefore, statement B is incorrect.

Statement C
Due to completely filled configuration, Mg has greater ionization energy than that of aluminium. Hence, statement C is correct.

Statement D
Due to greater effective nuclear charge of fluorine than chlorine, fluorine has greater electronegativity than chlorine.
Hence, statement D is correct.
