In the case of adaptive or acquired immunity, if the body of an individual is infected, it produces antibodies against the antigens along with the memory T cells and B cells. The response is specific for the antigen.

The first response to the exposure is a slow process but when the body of an individual is adapted towards the pathogen then it will result in a quick response on subsequent exposures.

Thus, adaptive immunity requires exposure to antigen to develop, T and B lymphocytes are the major cells involved and it is a specific defence.
