Medical termination of pregnancy has been legal under certain conditions in India but up-to 20th week of pregnancy. This act is passed in 1971.

MTPs can be done by two methods first is by taking the combination of two hormonal pills but it is feasible up to 9 weeks of pregnancy. Second method is surgical method after 9 weeks of pregnancy surgical method takes place in which fetus and placenta are removed surgically from the uterus.

MTPs is relatively safe during the first trimester(up to 12 weeks of pregnancy) and more risk in the second trimester. Qualified medical practitioners should always do MTPs because it is a susceptible method and if a small risk is taken against it. Then it can significantly affect the mother physically and mentally.
