The Santhal rebellion predates 1857. It was a rebellion of Santhal people led by 4 Murmu Brothers named Sindhu, Kanhu, Chand and Bhairav, in modern Jharkhand (then Bengal Presidency) mainly against the oppressive Zamindari system. The initially launched Guerilla warfare in the Jungles of Jharkhand. The British trapped these outstanding archers and killed them in a battle. The Santhal villages were plundered and the rebellion was brutally subdued. The reason was the oppression of police, atrocities of landlords and moneylenders, ill-treatment of small farmers by land revenue officials. Government banned shifting cultivation in forest areas. Santhals made a determined attempt to expel the outsiders – The “dikus” – and proclaimed the complete annihilation of the alien regime.
The slogan was raised by the leaders of Pabna revolt (1878-1883).
