Egg cell and polar nuclei are formed only after the megaspore undergoes three successive mitotic divisions to form a mature embryo sac. However, nucellus and funicle exist even before the megaspore is formed.
Nucellus is a mass of cells enclosed within the integuments of the ovule. One cell of nucellus differentiates into the MMC that undergoes meiosis to form megaspore.
The stalk by which the ovule is attached to the placenta is called funicle.
