• The Lisbon Treaty was signed by the heads of state and government of the 27 EU Member States on 13 December 2007. It is intended to reform the functioning of the European Union following the two waves of enlargement which have taken place since 2004 and which have increased the number of EU Member States from 15 to 27.
• The Treaty of Nice was agreed in December 2000 by the 2000 Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) and signed in February 2001. Paving the way for further EU enlargement, it provided a solution for further reforms to the institutions and decision-making process which had been started at the Treaty of Amsterdam.
• The Maastricht Treaty created the European Union as we know it today and led to the creation of the euro.
